In the farthest corners of humanity, the Wise One, an immortal guardian of knowledge and wisdom, has dispatched Demigods with the power to manipulate the earth. In Oros, each player assumes the role of one of these Demigods. They must educate their Followers on the wisdom of the mountains through study, worship, and experience. And only in the peaks of the mountains can the greatest enigmas be unraveled.

Oros is a strategic game that involves colliding tiles, erupting volcanoes, shaping mountains, gathering wisdom, and managing actions. Each player controls a unique mat and guides their Followers to various action spaces, which allow them to manipulate a shared environment like a giant jigsaw puzzle of plate tectonics. These action spaces permit players to shift land rows, move and collide tiles, form and erupt volcanoes, worship to gain wisdom, journey their Followers around the ever-changing landscape, and construct sacred places of study and worship on mountains. Building sacred places and worshipping in them yields wisdom, which enhances the abilities available for each action space. Wisdom is also used to boost the end game value of each sacred place built, as well as to attain other goals worth end game points.

As the Demigods of the Wise One construct sacred places, they ascend a ziggurat, which acts as a timer toward the end of the game. When one reaches the top, players conclude the round and then calculate a final score.

At the heart of Oros is the unique ability to shift, move, construct, erupt, and reposition the land within an endlessly connected play environment. This mechanism transforms every action into a puzzle of innovative problem solving, abstract thinking, and an ever-evolving strategy. Another significant element of the game is the player mat, which employs a minimal worker placement mechanism to regulate action opportunities. The mat also maintains an action economy that evolves differently for each player as they invest their earned wisdom into various action upgrades. Due to these fundamental aspects, there are numerous strategies for players to explore, and each game unfolds in a distinct, yet competitive manner.
